Broadband (ADSL)

Search
Broadband - a high-speed internet connection enabling you to access websites, download pictures, music tracks, e-mails and videos up to 10 times faster than with a standard 56K modem and to upload files to web-based servers around 4.5 times faster.

All this and a connection that is permanently on. That means instant connection every time - no more waiting for the screeching modem to connect. Because Broadband can be delivered through a standard analogue telephone line, you are also able to make calls at the same time as you are connected to the internet.

To be able to use a Broadband connection your PC must meet certain basic hardware and software requirements (see the tables to the right of this page).

Is Broadband available in your area?

Although Broadband is becoming more widely available, not all areas of the country are covered yet. To see if you are able to receive Broadband via your local exchange, use the Availbility Checker Service link on the right of your screen.

How does it work?

Broadband technology is delivered to your premises via an existing telephone line, to a Broadband modem which plugs into the telephone line and is connects to your computer.Filters are also added to the phone sockets to enable Broadband and the phone to be used at the same time.

You will also need to load some software onto the PC via the CD-ROM drive ... and that's it.
